Amanda Peters' (Catasauqua, Catasauqua) late goal wasn't enough as Wilkes University fell to Alvernia University 2-1 in a Freedom/Commonwealth Conference crossover field hockey matchup on Thursday night in Reading.
Alvernia pushed hard on offense in the opening, but
Lindsey Davenport (Dallas, Dallas) was able to make some key saves to keep the Crusaders off the board. They kept up the offensive pressure, however, and found the back of the cage with 6:54 left in the half, taking a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Lady Colonels turned the tables in the beginning of the second half, keeping possession of the ball and staying on Alvernia's half of the field. Wilkes was able to keep the Crusaders off the ball, forcing five penalty corners and two shots in the half's first 15 minutes.
However the Lady Colonels weren't able to tie the score and Alvernia took advantage, getting the ball back and getting one past Davenport to take a two-goal lead with less than 17 minutes left in the game.
Wilkes did not back down, getting the ball back to Alvernia's side of the field and, after a timeout, forced a penalty corner which led to Peters' goal off a pass from
Gina Elmy (Wilkes-Barre, G.A.R) with 4:58 remaining.
The Lady Colonels continued to press, getting three more penalty corners and two more shots, but were unable to convert, falling in heartbreaking fashion. Davenport finished with 14 saves on the night.
Wilkes (4-6, 0-3) travels to Center Valley this weekend to take on DeSales University at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
