LADY COLONELS START SEASON OFF ON GOOD NOTE

WILKES-BARRE – Sam Lynam (Spinnerstown, Quakertown) dropped in 22 points and the Lady Colonels led nearly the entire game in a 56-43 victory over PSU Hazleton on Monday night. Wilkes held the Nittany Lions to just 26 percent shooting from the floor on the evening.

Lynam wasted no time getting into the flow of the game, hitting the first bucket of the contest which was a three-pointer. PSU Hazleton took the lead a few minutes later, but after a jumper by Whitney Connolly (Liberty, Liberty) Wilkes never looked back. Halfway through the contest the Lady Colonels held a comfortable seven point lead.

Wilkes led by as much as 11 in the period, but couldn't break away from the Nittany Lions, holding onto a 10 point lead at the break. Lynam had 13 points on the half, including two-of-three from the three-point line. Angela Palmerio (Telford, Lansdale Catholic) added six points, while Megan Kazmerski (Kingston, Holy Redeemer) had three steals and three assists.

In the second period Wilkes took control of the game, starting the half with a three by Erin Schneider (Colchester, CT, Holy Name). Over the next nine minutes the Lady Colonels built up an 18 point margin, holding PSU Hazleton to two points over a 10 minute span. After sustaining the lead for the rest of the period, Wilkes made its foul shots and didn't let the Nittany Lions to mount a run, gliding to a 56-43 victory.

The Lady Colonels held PSU Hazleton to just 14.3 percent shooting from the floor in the second half, and forced 14 turnovers in the period to help keep their lead. In the game, Wilkes shot 70 percent from the free throw line and made five three-pointers to grab and sustain its lead.

Besides Lynam's 22 points, Wilkes was led by Brittany Ely (Montrose, Montrose) with 10 points and seven rebounds while hitting all of her free-throws, and Kazmerski ended up with nine rebounds on the night.

Wilkes will look to keep things rolling when they take on Western New England at the Golden Bear Hoop Classic in Springfield, Mass. That game is on Nov. 19 at 6:00 p.m.
