SPRINGFIELD – The Wilkes University women's basketball team competed in their second contest at the Golden Bear Hoops Classic on Saturday, falling to MIT 62-55.
Halfway through the first half the two teams found themselves tied at 20 points apiece. For the rest of the period, Wilkes found itself down, but never let MIT get too far ahead.
Whitney Connolly (Liberty, Liberty) hit two late first-half buckets to keep the Lady Colonels close, ending the half down 34-31.
Connolly led Wilkes in the period, scoring 10 points on five-of-seven shooting and pulling down four rebounds.
Amanda Pawlowski (Nanticoke, Holy Redeemer) added seven points of her own, while
Erin Schneider (Colchester, CT, Holy Name)chipped in with six. Wilkes shot 43 percent in the half from the field, as well as from the three point line.
MIT came out firing in the second half, scoring on their first four possessions to take a six point lead. The two teams then went on a three minute scoring draught before MIT put together another string of baskets to build a ten point advantage with 10:30 left in the game. For the rest of the period the Lady Colonels found themselves fighting to come back, but couldn't put together a string of scores to climb back in the game.
With just over two minutes to play Schneider hit a layup to pull Wilkes within six, but a three-pointer by MIT all but eliminated any chance of a Lady Colonel victory.
Schneider did most of her damage in the second half, finishing the game with 17 points and hitting four three-pointers, while Connolly and Pawlowski ended up with 12 points apiece.
Brittany Ely (Montrose, Montrose) led Wilkes with eight rebounds and four assists on the afternoon. Despite their hot start, the Lady Colonels shot just 24 percent in the second half.
Wilkes will have a change to turn things around when they host Marywood University on Tuesday, Nov. 23. That game will begin at 7:00 p.m.
