Sam Lynam (Spinnerstown/Quakertown) scored 16 points and grabbed eight boards but Wilkes University fell to The College of New Jersey 73-50 on the second day of the R1 Sports Blue Jay Classic women's basketball tournament at Elizabethtown College.
After falling 4-0 right away, the Lady Colonels narrowed it to one after a three-pointer from
Whitney Connolly (Liberty, PA/Liberty) made it 6-5 at the 17:02 mark. TCNJ responded by scoring the next seven points, going on top by eight with 11:53 left in the first half.
A three-pointer by
Erin Schneider (Colchester, CT/Holy Name) and then another by Lynam 1:28 later brought Wilkes to within three points at 14-11 with 10:16 left. The Lions responded with a three of their own, sparking a 15-3 run over 4:59 to start to break away, going up 29-14 with a little more than five minutes before the break. TCNJ then outscored Wilkes by three over the final minutes to take a 38-20 lead into the half.
After trading baskets over the first three minutes, the Lions used a three-pointer and then a fast break layup to go on top 47-25 with 15:28 to go. After a three by Schneider, TCNJ went on an 8-0 run and led by as many as 28 en route to the win.
Three players scored in double-figures for the Lions as Liz West led with 11 points. Stephanie Prall and Jessica Imhof each added 10 points.
Lynam finished 4-of-15 from the field, but converted 6-of-7 free throws to get her eighth game of double-figures scoring. Connolly dropped in a season-high 14 points, going 9-of-12 from the line and grabbing six rebounds. Schneider added 10 points in 12 minutes off the bench for Wilkes.
The Lady Colonels, now 3-7 on the year, are off until next month, returning to the court on January 5 as they host Commonwealth opponent Albright at the Marts Center. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
