Sam Lynam (Spinnerstown/Quakertown) went for 32 points and 10 rebounds and
Megan Kazmerski (Kingston, PA/Holy Redeemer) added 18 points and 14 rebounds as Wilkes University came back from nine points down in the second half to defeat Susquehanna University 75-73 in a non-conference women's basketball matchup on Wednesday night.
The point and rebound totals for both Lynam and Kazmerski were season highs.
Susquehanna took a nine-point lead at 62-53 on a jumper from Samantha Cartwright with 9:46 left in the game. The Lady Colonels responded with a layup from
Helen Lawry (Glenville, NY/Burnt Hills - Ballston Lake) then a three-pointer from Lynam on the next possession, cutting their deficit to four with 8:39 remaining.
After a Susquehanna jumper, Lynam nailed another three to get Wilkes to within three at 64-61 with 6:57 left. The Crusaders were able to get their advantage back to five as both teams traded baskets until a jumper and one by Lynam at the 2:07 mark got the Lady Colonels to within two at 71-69.
After two failed possessions and a foul on the other end by Susquehanna,
Whitney Connolly (Liberty, PA/Liberty) drained a pair of free throws to knot the score at 71 with 52 seconds remaining. The Crusaders retook the lead with two free throws of their own before Lynam came right back, getting a bucket and converting the foul shot after the foul as the Lady Colonels took the one-point advantage with 19 seconds left.
After a Crusaders timeout, Erika Barron missed a jumper with 10 seconds left and Kazmerski grabbed the rebound, getting fouled and converting one of two free throws as the Lady Colonels came away with the two-point win.
The first half was mostly a back-and-forth game as neither team led by more than four points. Both Lynam and Kazmerski had 12 points at the break, combining to go 10-of-21 from the floor with 15 rebounds in the game's first 20 minutes. Four players scored in double-figures for the Crusaders, as Shannon Grunwald led with 23 points. Gina Palazzi added a double-double with 11 points and 11 boards.
Lynam finished 12-of-24 from the field and converted all six of her free throws, adding a block and a steal. Kazmerski went 7-of-14 from the floor, including 3-of-5 from three-point range, blocking two shots in 27 minutes. Connollly added eight points, eight rebounds and a pair of blocks.
The Lady Colonels (3-5), owners of back-to-back wins, will participate in the R1 Sports Blue Jay Classic this weekend at Elizabethtown College, facing the hosts on Friday night and TCNJ on Saturday afternoon.
