Box Score

The Wilkes University women's basketball team shot 31 percent from the field and turned the ball over 28 times en route to a 72-55 loss to Delaware Valley on Saturday. The defeat marks the eighth loss in a row for the Lady Colonels, who are now 3-19 (1-10) on the season.

Wilkes came into the game with a 3-18 record, while the Aggies were 15-7 before the contest began.

The game began with Brittany Ely (Montrose, Pa./Montrose) scoring two quick buckets for the Lady Colonels, as Wilkes forced Delaware Valley into numerous turnovers. Wilkes was able to fend off the Aggies as the game continued, with baskets by Megan Kazmerski (Kingston, PA/Holy Redeemer) and Lyndsay Ellis (Dallas, Pa./Dallas). With 13 minutes left in the period Delaware Valley tied the game at 10, and soon after took its first lead of the contest on a jump shot. That lead didn't last long, as Amanda Pawlowski (Nanticoke, PA/Holy Redeemer) hit a deep three to give the Lady Colonels the lead once again.

The teams exchanged baskets for most of the half, but Wilkes kept the Aggies at bay for most of the period. At the eight minute mark the game took a turn, and Delaware Valley went on a 7-0 run, opening up a five point lead with just under five minutes left in the half. The Lady Colonels didn't let the deficit get out of hand though, as a layup by Ely with 55 second left tied the game at 26. The Aggies tacked on one more bucket before the break, making the score 28-26 at halftime.

Wilkes was led by Lyndsay Ellis (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) with 10 points in the period, while Ely had eight points, five rebounds and two steals while never exiting the game. The Lady Colonels shot 33 percent from the field in the half, but held the Aggies to just 31 percent. They also hit three three-pointers, while Delaware Valley hit on only 1-of-13 from beyond the arc.

The second half began with the Aggies jumping all over Wilkes, as Delaware Valley went on another 7-0 run to open up a nine point lead. The Aggies pushed their lead to double digits, as Wilkes struggled putting the ball in the basket, as well as stopping Delaware Valley from scoring.

Wilkes was unable to answer with a run of its own, and halfway through the period Delaware Valley had a comfortable 48-36 lead. The Aggie lead never exceeded 17 points, but with five minutes left to play Wilkes hadn't made any progress on the deficit, finding itself down 60-45. The Aggies then cruised to a 72-55 victory.

Wilkes was led by Ellis who finished with 19 points and six rebounds. Ely added a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Pawlowski chipped in eight points of her own. The Lady Colonels shot only 31 percent from the field, and couldn't stop the interior play of Jenna Peoples, who finished with 25 points and 14 rebounds.

The Lady Colonels will look to turn things around when they host DeSales on Tuesday, Feb. 16. That game will begin at 6:00 p.m. at the Marts Center.
