TURNOVERS DOWN WILKES AGAINST BULLDOGS

2/16/2010 6:43:50 PM

Box Score

The Lady Colonels committed 33 turnovers and shot just 25 percent from the field on Tuesday night as DeSales defeated Wilkes running away, 76-42.

The teams came into the contest headed in different directions, as DeSales was on an eight-game win streak, while the Lady Colonels were looking for their first victory since Jan. 13.

The game began with each team playing solid full court defense, and three minutes into the contest Wilkes held a 4-2 lead. Despite having a shortage of players, Wilkes made the Bulldogs work on offense, and kept DeSales off the offensive boards, making for a low scoring beginning to the game, with Wilkes on top most of the way.

The Bulldogs then hit consecutive three-pointers, and after a free throw found themselves up 13-11 halfway through the period. The pace of the contest picked up, as steals and turnovers made for an up-and-down tempo, but nether team could mount a proper run to establish a comfortable lead.

With eight and a half minutes left, Angela Palmerio (Telford, PA/Lansdale Catholic) hit a three to give the Lady Colonels a three point advantage, but DeSales answered with five quick points, retaking the lead with seven minutes left to play, a lead they would retain the rest of the half.

The game picked up its pace once again, with the Bulldogs forcing Lady Colonel turnovers and converting on the offensive end. After three consecutive scoring possessions Wilkes called timeout, down 32-18 with just under three minutes in the half. Out of the timeout DeSales scored five unanswered points, making the score 37-18 at the break.

Wilkes was led by Megan Kazmerski (Kingston, PA/Holy Redeemer) with seven points and five rebounds in the half, while Palermio added five points, and Lyndsay Ellis (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) had four points and five rebounds. The Lady Colonels shot only 19 percent from the field, and had 19 turnovers in the period. Meanwhile, DeSales shot 40 percent in the half, and committed only nine turnovers.

The second half began as the first had ended, as DeSales went on a quick 7-0 run to pull ahead by 26 just over two minutes into the period. The Bulldogs extended that lead to 30 with 11:54 left, forcing a timeout by Wilkes. DeSales held that lead for most of the period, keeping Wilkes at bay by working the ball inside.

DeSales kept up the pressure as the game winded down, winning by a final score of 76-42.

Wilkes was led by Kazmerski with 12 points, while Palmerio ended up with 10. Brittany Ely (Montrose, Pa./Montrose) grabbed 10 rebounds for the Lady Colonels, her second double-digit rebound game in a row. Wilkes shot 25 percent from the floor in the game, and committed 33 turnovers. DeSales had four players in double-figures scoring, and shot over 42 percent on the night.

The Lady Colonels will try and bounce back when they head to St. Davids, Pa. to take on Eastern. Wilkes defeated Eastern earlier in the season, 58-50. That game will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 18.
