The Lady Colonels shot 33 percent from the floor and were out-rebounded by 24 rebounds on Saturday, falling to rival King's College by a score of 90-61.
Each team was participating in its last game of the regular season, as Wilkes came into the contest with a 3-21 (1-12) record, while King's was 12-12 (7-6) before the game started.
Wilkes came out with tenacious full court pressure, forcing multiple Monarch turnovers. Offensively, they were able to connect on consecutive layups, and five minutes into the game they held a 9-4 point lead. The Lady Colonels held that lead till the 12 minute mark when a layup by King's gave them a 12-11 advantage.
Over the next few minutes, the Monarchs went on a 9-0 run, forcing a Wilkes timeout with 10:12 left in the period. Each team was in the bonus early, making for many free throw attempts by both squads. King's built up a 13 point lead with seven minutes left in the half, but a deep
Megan Kazmerski (Kingston, PA/Holy Redeemer) three kept the Monarchs in check.
The teams then went back and forth as the pace of the game began to pick up, but Wilkes couldn't put together a string of stops defensively, as King's made many free throws and layups to stay ahead. As the half wound down King's hit two more free throws to make the score 47-32 at the break.
Wilkes was led by Kazmerski in the half, who had eight points and nine rebounds to go along with four steals and two assists.
Amanda Pawlowski (Nanticoke, PA/Holy Redeemer) and
Whitney Connolly (Liberty, PA/Liberty) added five points a piece, while
Brittany Ely (Montrose, Pa./Montrose) had four points for the Lady Colonels. Wilkes shot over 32 percent in the half, but the Monarchs connected on 45 percent of their shots, and were led by Julianna Lynott who had 18 points and nine rebounds in 14 minutes of play.
The second half began as a track meet, with each team flying up and down the floor connecting on layups and easy buckets. Wilkes cut the deficit to 10 on an and-one basket by Kazmerski, but King's quickly got those points back on another fast break layup. A few possessions later
Lyndsay Ellis (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) connected on an and-one layup, and after the free throw, cut the King's lead to nine points.
Wilkes scored on the ensuing possession, but as it had been the entire game, King's had an answer on the other end of the floor. As the clock went under 10 minutes left to play, King's connected on a string of baskets, helping it to open up a 20 point lead.
Wilkes was never able to regroup afterwards, and down the stretch King's converted on many free throws, cruising to a 90-61 victory.
The Lady Colonels were led by Kazmerski, who had arguably her best performance of the season, ending with 16 points, 13 rebounds, six steals and five assists. Ellis added 10 points of her own, while Pawlowski and Ely each chipped in eight points.
Wilkes ends its season with a 3-22 record, 1-13 in Freedom Conference play.
