Game 1
Game 2
The Wilkes University baseball team played its final games in Myrtle Beach on Sunday against PSU Berks, and after 15 innings of baseball, won the first game 8-4, and lost the second in extra innings, 7-6.
Wilkes was the first to strike in the first game, as
Carmen Lopresto (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area) scored after hitting a triple to left on a
Mike McAndrew (Avoca, Pa./Pittston Area) single to right in the second inning. After loading the bases with no outs,
Randy Dengler (Ashland, Pa./Tri-Valley ) hit into a fielder's choice, scoring McAndrew and giving Wilkes a 2-0 lead.
Al Clocker (Swoyersville/Wyoming Valley West) kept the hits coming, singling to right and scoring
Angus Neary (Old Forge/Riverside).
Scott Skammer (Dallas, PA/Dallas) then grounded out, but scored Dengler from third, and Wilkes had itself a 4-0 lead.
Ryan Fetterman (Endicott, NY/Maine Endwell ) was on the hill for the Colonels, and started the game off strong, giving up just three hits in the first three innings, but walking no one, and no batter made it past second base. In the top of the fourth the middle of the order came through for the Colonels, as back-to-back doubles by Neary and Dengler scored two more runs for Wilkes, pushing the lead to six.
PSU Berks got on the board in the bottom of the fourth, but the only run scored was unearned. In the top of the sixth, Wilkes tacked on two more runs on a double by Clocker, giving the Colonels a comfortable 8-1 lead. In the bottom of the inning the Nittany Lions answered, scoring three runs of their own and pulling to within four.
Wilkes then shut the door in the seventh, as
Mark Siebel (Rumson, NJ/Rumson Fair Haven) took PSU Berks down in order, sealing the 8-4 victory.
In the second game, freshman
Zach Lazar (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) made the start for the Colonels, who were looking to end up with a winning record on the trip. Wilkes gave up one in the first inning, but in the bottom of the frame McAndrew and
Matt Ruch (Dallas, Pa./Holy Redeemer ) each doubled to start off the contest offensively, quickly tying things up. Dengler then came up and got Ruch home, and after one Wilkes had a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the second it was the bottom half of the Colonel's lineup getting the job done, as Trevin Jaggers,
Justin Fortin (Stroudsburg/Stroudsburg) and
Tom Plessl (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland ) each hit singles, with Plessl knocking in Jaggers for Wilkes' third run. McAndrew kept his hot bat going, hitting a single to right and scoring Fortin.
In the top of the fifth inning Wilkes ran into some trouble, committing a costly error and allowing PSU to score three unearned runs. Wilkes answered quickly in the bottom of the inning in the form of a
Joel Watson (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale) home run deep to left center, giving the Colonels a 5-4 lead.
In the top of the seventh the Lions answered, scoring two runs and taking the lead 6-5. Wilkes had the top of the order due up in the bottom of the frame, and with two outs
Joel Watson (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale) singled to third base. After advancing on a wild pitch, Skammer came up and singled to left, and Watson was able to scurry home for the game-tying run, sending it into extra innings.
In the top of the eighth another error led to a PSU run, and in the bottom of the inning Wilkes got two runners on the bases in the form o f
Jeremy Watson (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale) and
Al Clocker (Swoyersville/Wyoming Valley West), but couldn't drive them in, falling 7-6 in eight innings played.
The Colonels had six different players drive in runs, and were led by
Joel Watson (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale) and McAndrew, each of whom had multiple hits in the game. With the loss Wilkes is now 2-3 on the season.
The Colonles now have a break till Saturday, March 13 when they play Neumann away from home. That double-header will begin at noon.
