WILKES-BARRE –
Sam Lynam (Spinnerstown/Quakertown) had 27 points and
Megan Kazmerski (Kingston, PA/Holy Redeemer) had a double-double against King's on Saturday afternoon, but the Monarch offense was too much for Wilkes as the Lady Colonels fell 89-72 in Freedom Conference action at the Marts Center.
Wilkes was competitive early, hitting its shots and getting to the free throw line. The Monarchs relied heavily upon the three-point shot in opening 10 minutes, hitting four three-pointers over that period of time. Early baskets and free throws by Kazmerski helped keep the Lady Colonels in the game, as halfway through the period Wilkes found itself down seven points.
The rest of the half belonged to the Monarchs, who made multiple trips to the free throw line and forced Wilkes into foul trouble. Lynam was able to keep the Lady Colonels' deficit at a reasonable margin through a three-pointer and free throws as the half wound down, but foul trouble forced her to sit late in the period. After a few free throws by
Angela Palmerio (Telford, PA/Lansdale Catholic) and a late three-pointer by King's, Wilkes found itself down 46-29 at the break.
Despite playing just 10 minutes, Lynam had 14 points on five-of-seven from the floor in the half, but also three fouls. Kazmerski added seven points and four rebounds as Wilkes shots 32.1 percent from the floor. The Monarchs shots 21 free throws in the half and hit five three-pointers to help pull away late in the half.
Early in the second half King's continued pushing offensively, starting the period with a layup and a three-pointer. Over the next nine minutes the Monarchs would hold over a 20 point lead until a three-pointer by Kazmerski brought the deficit to 18.
In the second portion of the second half the two teams flew up and down the floor, taking multiple shots with Wilkes heading to the free throw line frequently. Three-pointers by Kazmerski and Lynam helped propel Wilkes forward, but every time the Lady Colonels seemed to be crawling back into the game, King's would make a layup or three-pointers to keep Wilkes at bay. In the end the Monarchs took the victory, 89-72.
Lynam finished with 27 points and eight rebounds, while Kazmerski had 18 points and 13 rebounds in the game.
Angela Palmerio (Telford, PA/Lansdale Catholic) added 13 points of her own and
Whitney Connolly (Liberty, PA/Liberty) had 10 as four Lady Colonels scored in double figures on the afternoon. King's also had four players in double figures scoring.
The women's basketball team will next host DeSales on Wednesday, Jan. 19. That game will begin at 6:00 p.m. at the Marts Center.
