WILKES-BARRE –
Sam Lynam (Spinnerstown/Quakertown) had 29 points on Saturday afternoon but it wasn't enough against Manhattanville as the Valiants defeated the Lady Colonels at home, 86-65. With the loss Wilkes falls to 3-9, 0-3 on the season.
The first half was all offense, as each team shot over 48 percent in the period. Wilkes struggled from the outside early, recording most of their baskets in the lane. Meanwhile, timely three-pointers by the Valiants helped them to develop a 10 point lead halfway through the period. Wilkes hung tough though, as layups by
Megan Kazmerski (Kingston, PA/Holy Redeemer) and
Angela Palmerio (Telford, PA/Lansdale Catholic) kept the deficit close.
Down the stretch in the half Manhattanville remained on fire from the field, connecting on multiple layups to keep raking up the points. The two teams exchanged shots at the end of the period, with Lynam hitting three layups in the last 2:28 to make the score 52-36 at the break.
Lynam had 18 points in the half as well as three rebounds. Kazmerski chipped in seven points of her own as well as three rebounds and two assists. The Valiants shot just under 58 percent from the field and had three players in double figures scoring in the period.
In the second period Manhattanville extended its lead to as much as 30 points, as the Lady Colonels' offense was stagnant for the beginning of the half. In the second half of the period Wilkes was able to make some stops defensively and get to the free throw line, but the 20 point deficit was too much in the end. Wilkes didn't hit its first three-pointer until 4:18 left in the game as the Valiants went on to win 86-65.
Lynam, the leading scorer in the Freedom Conference, finished with 29 points and five rebounds. Kazmerski added 12 points while
Erin Schneider (Colchester, CT/Holy Name) scored seven points and passed out three assists. Manhattanville shot over 50 percent on the day, while the Lady Colonels hit on 40 percent of their shots.
The Lady Colonels will now head to St.David's, Pa. to take on Eastern University. That game is on Wednesday, Jan. 12 and begins at 6:00 p.m.
