WILKES WOMEN'S BASKETBALL STARTS 2-0 WITH 59-56 WIN AT KEYSTONE

LA PLUME, PA – Behind Megan Kazmerski (Kingston, PA/Holy Redeemer)'s 18-point, 12-rebound performance, the Wilkes University women's basketball team held on for a 59-56 non-conference win at Keystone College Thursday night at the Kline Center.

With the win Wilkes remains unbeaten at 2-0 on the young season, while Keystone drops to 0-2 overall.

Wilkes took a 27-26 advantage to the half thanks to Elena Stambone (Jessup, PA/Valley View)'s eight first half points. Kazmerski poured in seven of her 18 in the first frame and grabbed nine first half rebounds as the Lady Colonels collected 14 offensive boards over the first 20 minutes of play leading to six points.

After Keystone took a four point lead to open the second half, Kazmerski made good on an old-fashioned three point play followed by a bucket from Chelsea Brown (Garnet Valley, PA/Garnet Valley) as Wilkes fought back to take a 39-38 lead with 11:01 left. The two teams traded baskets over the next four minutes before Angela Palmerio (Telford, PA/Lansdale Catholic) stuck a mid range jumper and a driving layup to push the Lady Colonel lead to 49-46 with 6:14 remaining.

After Kazmerski hit two free throws, Katie Thomas drilled a huge three-pointer with 3:12 to go to give Wilkes some breathing room at 55-50. Some solid defense over the next four possessions kept Keystone at bay as Palmerio hit two more times from the charity stripe to seal the road win for Wilkes.

Kazmerski was the lone Wilkes player in double figures as Stambone followed with nine points and two assists. Palmerio, Whitney Connolly (Liberty, PA/Liberty), and Allison Walsh (Dickson City, PA/Mid Valley) each contributed six points, while Walsh added 10 rebounds. Brown chipped in with six points, while Amanda Pawlowski (Nanticoke, PA/Holy Redeemer) ran the Lady Colonel offense tallying six helpers.

Wilkes was cold shooting from the floor finishing just 21-for-73 (28.8 percent). The Wilkes defense was up to the task causing problems for Keystone as the Giants didn't fare much better from the field going 21-for-74 (28.4 percent). Wilkes outrebounded Keystone 51-48 including a 24-21 advantage on the offensive glass.

Alyssa Cuomo led the Giants attack with 17 points on 6-of-20 shooting. Tianna Cuttino followed with 13 points and six assists.

Wilkes will make their 2011-12 home debut Saturday when the Lady Colonels welcome Penn State Wilkes-Barre to the Marts Center for a 1:00 p.m. non-conference matchup.
