WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University women's basketball team pushed their winning streak to three games as the Lady Colonels defeated Penn State Wilkes-Barre 96-50 in their home opener at the Marts Center Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Colonels improve to 3-0 on the year while the Mountain Lions drop to 1-2 overall.

Five players scored in double figures to lead the way for Wilkes.  Elena Stambone (Jessup, PA/Valley View) finished with 19 points, Whitney Connolly (Liberty, PA/Liberty) had 14, Angela Palmerio (Telford, PA/Lansdale Catholic) 14 and Besiana Sheshi (Baltimore, MD/Maryvale Preparatory) 13 tallies.

Allison Walsh (Dickson City, PA/Mid Valley) had 10 points and garnered 10 rebounds as this was her first double-double in points and rebounds on the court for Wilkes.

Amanda Pawlowski (Nanticoke, PA/Holy Redeemer) led the Lady Colonels with a total of seven assists adding five points and one steal. Megan Kazmerski (Kingston, PA/Holy Redeemer) had five points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals to seal the win for Wilkes.

In the first half Wilkes went on a 6-0 scoring run started by Stambone with 7:15 left on a layup assisted by Kate Thomas (Schuylkill Haven, PA/Blue Mountain) giving the Lady Colonels a 26-20 lead.  The Lady Colones ended the first half with a ten point advantage at 40-30.

The second half was much of the same as Wilkes used two huge runs, a 9-0 rally to start the frame, and a 24-2 surge to take complete control midway through the second stanza. Wilkes controlled the paint scoring 24 points in the lane compared to PSU Wilkes-Barre 8.

The 96 points was the second most points scored in a single game at Wilkes.  On February 28th, 1979 Wilkes scored 114 points against Misericordia University.

Tiara Braithwaite led the Mountain Lions attack with 12 points shooting 6-for-11 while adding 11 rebounds.

Wilkes returns to action Tuesday with a non-league road matchup at Marywood University in Scranton, PA. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
