WILKES WOMEN'S BASKETBALL DROPS FREEDOM OPENER AGAINST MISERICORDIA, 81-60

WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University women's basketball team dropped its Freedom Conference opener against Misericordia University 81-60 Wednesday night in the Marts Center.

The Lady Colonels fall to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in Freedom play. The Lady Cougars improve to 2-3 on the season and 1-0 in the conference.

In the first half of play, Wilkes went on a 6-0 scoring run to go up 24-14 with 7:41 left until the break. Misericordia answered with 3:29 left to play to take their first lead of the contest, 27-26. Throughout the first half of play there were five lead changes. At the half, Misericordia claimed a 35-31 advantage.

Entering the second half, Misericordia opened up on a 6-0 run with just 17:52 left to increase their lead to 41-35. From that point on it was all Lady Cougars as they never looked backed. Misericordia scored 18 points in the paint compared to Wilkes' four. The biggest turn-around was second chance points as Misericordia held a 17-2 edge.

Wilkes was led by Megan Kazmerski (Kingston, PA/Holy Redeemer) who finished with a season-high 21 points on 8-for-13 shooting on the night. The junior guard also added two steals, one rebound and one assist. Freshman Elena Stambone (Jessup, PA/Valley View) followed with 14 points on the night adding four steals, three rebounds, and one helper.

Chelsea Brown (Garnet Valley, PA/Garnet Valley) grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds, seven defensive and three offensive. Junior point guard Amanda Pawlowski (Nanticoke, PA/Holy Redeemer) ran the Lady Colonel offense finishing with a team-best six assists.

For Misericordia, Christine Marks led the way with a game-high 28 points and 15 rebounds. Marks went perfect at the charity stripe finishing 14-14 in a foul plagued contest.

Up next Wilkes travels to DeSales University for another Freedom Conference match-up in Center Valley, Pa.  Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
