Box Score

WILKES-BARRE – Sam Lynam (Spinnerstown/Quakertown) had 23 points and 11 rebounds, and hit her 1,000th career point on a free throw in the second half to become the ninth player in Wilkes women's basketball history to make the milestone. Her 23 points also help Wilkes defeat Delaware Valley at home, 69-60.

Before the game began Wilkes honored its three seniors in Lynam, Erin Schneider (Colchester, CT/Holy Name), and Brittany Ely (Montrose/Montrose), all of whom started the contest. The first 20 minutes of the game weren't kind to Wilkes, as multiple scores in the paint by Delaware Valley helped it develop a 10 point lead with 13:07 left in the half.

Over the next five minutes Wilkes battled back, as layups by Lynam, Megan Kazmerski (Kingston, PA/Holy Redeemer), and a three-pointer by Whitney Connolly (Liberty, PA/Liberty) brought the deficit to two with 8:22 left. A little over a minute later Lynam connected on a jumper that tied the game for the first time since 0-0. Connolly banged home another three pointer a few minutes later, giving Wilkes its first lead of the contest.

The rest of the half went back and forth, but another score by Connolly put Wilkes ahead at the end of the half, taking a 34-32 lead into the break.

Wilkes was led by Connolly in the half with 11 points and five rebounds while hitting all four of her shots, including two three pointers. Lynam added nine points and six rebounds, which meant she needed six more points in the second period to reach 1,000.

In the first portion of the second half Wilkes improved upon its lead, as free throw shots by Amanda Pawlowski (Nanticoke, PA/Holy Redeemer) and a layup by Kazmerski gave the Lady Colonels a seven point advantage with 12:22 to go.

At the 9:14 mark Lynam drove hard to the basket, drawing contact while connecting on the shot. The field goal gave her 999 points in her career, and the ensuing free throw attempt put her right on the 1,000 point mark, making her the ninth women's basketball player at Wilkes to accomplish the feat. The three-point play also gave Wilkes a six point lead at the time.

Lynam wasn't done though, as the Lady Colonels held off the Aggies until the 2:32 mark when they held just a three point advantage. Lynam then stepped to the free throw line and drained both attempts, only to come back to the line 30 seconds later and hit two more charity stripe shots, giving Wilkes a seven point lead once again.

Delaware Valley couldn't make the appropriate shots to work itself back into the game, and the Lady Colonels went on to collect a 69-60 victory on the memorable afternoon.

Lynam finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds as well as two steals and a 1,000 point career. Two other Lady Colonels had double-doubles in the game, as Connolly finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds on five-of-seven from the floor, and Kazmerski had 13 points and 13 rebounds. Wilkes held Delaware Valley to just 31 percent shooting from the field, and out-rebounded the Aggies 53-48.

With the win Wilkes improves to 6-17, 2-10 on the season. It will now head to Center Valley, Pa. next Tuesday to take on DeSales. That game will begin at 6:00 p.m.
