PURCHASE, NY -
Megan Kazmerski (Kingston, PA/Holy Redeemer) had a game-high 19 points to go along with six steals but a late second half run by the Lady Colonels fell short as Wilkes University lost to Manhattanville College 84-72 in a Freedom Conference women's basketball matchup Saturday afternoon in New York.
Manhattanville controlled the end of the first half, going on a 17-5 run in the final 4:34 to take a commanding 47-30 lead into the break. After going up by 19 points early in the second, Wilkes answered with a three-pointer from
Erin Schneider (Colchester, CT/Holy Name) and an offensive board and putback by
Whitney Connolly (Liberty, PA/Liberty) on the next possession to get back to within 14 points with 18:38 left.
After a Valiants bucket, Wilkes got to the foul line on three of its next four trips down the floor, as Schneider, Connolly and
Sam Lynam (Spinnerstown/Quakertown) combined to convert all six attempts to get the Lady Colonels to within 10 at 51-41 with 15:32 remaining.
A free throw by Manhattanville extended its lead back to 11, but Kazmerski would jumpstart a 12-6 Lady Colonels run with a layup followed by a pair of free throws as Wilkes narrowed the gap to 58-53 with 9:18 remaining. However, a layup by the Valiants Courtney Turner stopped the bleeding and a three by Taylor Wilson switched the momentum to Manhattanville's side, outscoring the Lady Colonels 26-19 the rest of the way to finish off the win.
Turner finished with 18 points and seven rebounds while Simona Gordon led the Valiants with 19 points and seven assists. Wilson chipped in 16 points to go along with her seven boards.
Kazmerski's 19 points came on 8-of-18 shooting, adding seven rebounds and four assists. Lynam finished with 18 points, as her run towards 1,000 career points now puts her at 970 with four games left in the season. Connolly added 14 points and seven rebounds for Wilkes.
The Lady Colonels (5-16, 1-9) come back home to host Eastern University on Wednesday night at the Marts Center. Tip is set for 6:00 p.m.
