SWOYERSVILLE –
Ryan Fetterman (Endicott, NY/Maine Endwell ) gave up just two hits and one earned run in six innings of work while
Rich Cosgrove (Wilkes-Barre/Meyers) made an incredible diving catch for the final out in a 4-3 game one win as Wilkes University split a doubleheader with league-leader Misericordia University in Freedom Conference baseball action on Sunday afternoon at Roosevelt Field in Swoyersville.
The Cougars came back to win game two 14-3 in a twinbill that was played at a neutral field due to the wet conditions at the home of Misericordia.
Fetterman pitched a gem in the opener, as the Cougars were only able to get one run of him, an RBI double in the third.
The Colonels struck back in the fifth when
Carmen Lopresto (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area)'s single brought home Cosgrove before
Tom Plessl (Schnecksville, PA/Parkland) brough Cosgrove and
A.J. Mihaly (Berwick, PA/Berwick Area) in with a single of his own.
After Fetterman was taken out entering the seventh, Misericordia capitalized as the Cougars manufactured two runs off of
Angus Neary (Old Forge/Riverside) to tie it up at 3-3 and send the game to extra innings.
It didn't take long for the Colonels to get on the board as Neary redeemed himself with a walk and a stolen base, setting Wilkes up with just one out. Two batters later, a
Tyler Marino (Wilkes-Barre, PA/Meyers) pinch-hit single brought around Neary for the go-ahead run.
With Misericordia threatening in the bottom half with runners on first and second with one out,
Mark Siebel (Rumson, NJ/Rumson Fair Haven) entered the game, striking out his first batter to put two away. Siebel then got Joe Tagliarini to fly out to deep center as Cosgrove made a diving catch going backwards to end the game.
Fetterman finished with four strikeouts and three walks in his six innings.
Al Clocker (Swoyersville/Wyoming Valley West) reached base three times, going 2-for-2 with a walk.
In game two, Neary was the Colonels only bright spot, hitting a three-run homer in the fourth inning as the Cougars got back at Wilkes with a big 11-run win.
The Colonels sit in fourth place in the Freedom Conference with a 7-8 mark with six league games remaining. They'll tune up for their midweek series with Delaware Valley College with a single game against Penn State Hazleton at Artillery Park on Monday. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
