WILKES-BARRE – Despite scoring the first goal of the contest, the Wilkes University women's lacrosse team struggled through a rainy game against Widener on Wednesday afternoon, losing to the Pride by a score of 17-2.
Wilkes struck early in the game on a drive and score by
Gabby Ford (Elmont, NY/Sewanhaka), giving her 20 goals on the season. The Pride would then mount a 16-0 run that ran throughout the rest of the half and into the second period, as the Lady Colonels struggled to control possession and find chances to score.
Keri Meerholz (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) finally broke the offensive slump late in the second period, scoring with 8:04 left to play. The Pride would add one more down the stretch, controlling the ball for most of the second period and making the final score 17-2.
The two scores in the game came from Meerholz and Ford, while
Justine Thimmel (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock) was able to save 10 shots from Widener in the contest.
The Lady Colonels will be back in action when they host Lebanon Valley on Friday, April 8. That game will begin at 5:00 p.m. at the Ralston Athletic Complex.
