WILKES FIELD HOCKEY STUMBLES AT EASTERN, 6-1
ST. DAVIDS – Eastern University scored four goals in the first half and added two in the second frame to post a 6-1 win over visiting Wilkes University in both teams' Freedom Conference openers Saturday afternoon.
With the loss Wilkes slips to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in Freedom play. Eastern improves to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in conference matches.
Eastern jumped out to a 4-0 lead at the half and never looked back. Abby Wagner scored twice in the first frame and added one assist. The Eagles then added to their lead in the second posting two goals to open a 6-0 lead early in the second frame. Wilkes got on the board at the 61:20 mark when Aliya Frankel (Ventnor, NJ/Holy Spirit) scored unassisted to cut the deficit to 6-1.
Wilkes goalie Lindsey Davenport (Dallas, PA/Dallas) made 13 saves in net, splitting time with Jenna Schall (Easton, PA/Freedom) who finished with two saves. Eastern goalies Christin Suetterlein and Sara Blaylock split time in net to record the shutout. Suetterlein made one stop while Blaylock posted five saves.
Eastern held a commanding 29-10 shot advantage, while garnering 11 penalty corners to Wilkes' nine attempts.
Wilkes will return to action Monday when the Lady Colonels host Alvernia University for a non-conference tilt scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Schmidt Stadium.
