TWO LADY COLONELS HIT DOUBLE FIGURES IN A DEFEAT AGAINST EASTERN, 72-52

WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes women' basketball team fell to Eastern in Freedom play Wednesday evening 72-52 from the Marts Center.

The Lady Colonels drop to 5-13 overall and 0-7 in league play.  The Eagles improve to 13-4 on the year and 5-2 in the conference.

Eastern took the first possession of the game and put the first four points on the board until a layup by Allison Walsh (Dickson City, PA/Mid Valley) got the Lady Colonels first bucket with 18:22 to play in the first half.  With 11:24 left in action the Eagles had control of the game going up ten, 22-12.  Wilkes continued to play hard as they moved to within six points, 29-23.  A bucket beyond the arc by Whitney Connolly (Liberty, PA/Liberty) with 50 seconds left cut the deficit to just four points, 30-26 to close out the first half.

Wilkes scored the first basket of the second stanza to cut the lead to two, 30-28.  The Eagles then went on a 4-0 run.  A three-pointer by Megan Kazmerski (Kingston, PA/Holy Redeemer) got Wilkes within four at the 18 minute marker, 34-30.  For the rest of the game the Eagles regained control and never looked back. The Lady Colonels never stopped playing and with 7:27 left to play a basket from the three-point line by Angela Palmerio (Telford, PA/Lansdale Catholic) pulled Wilkes to within seven points of the Eagles, 57-50.  To close the game out Eastern went on a 5-0 run as they took their largest lead of 20 points on the night to earn their fifth Freedom Conference victory.

Two players for Wilkes hit double figures Kazmerski (13) and Connolly (13). Kazmerski also grabbed six rebounds. Allison Walsh (Dickson City, PA/Mid Valley) had 11 boards on the evening, seven defensive and four offensive. 

Meghan Nowak for Eastern scored a game-high 29 points on the night while garnering 12 rebounds.

Wilkes is back on the court this Saturday as they travel to Doylestown, Pa to take on Freedom Conference foe Delaware Valley.  Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
