LADY COLONELS PULL AWAY FROM HORNETS, WIN OPENER 54-42

WILKES-BARRE – Elena Stambone (Jessup, PA/Valley View) dropped twenty points in a leading effort to push Wilkes University over visiting Shenandoah University 54-42 Thursday evening at the Marts Center.

With the win, the Lady Colonels start their season 1-0 while the Hornets fall to 0-1.

The Lady Colonels battled the Hornets to a 43-42 point game with just three minutes left in regulation. Wilkes' outstanding defensive pressure caused numerous Hornet turnovers which lead the Lady Colonels to the free throw line and proved to be the difference-maker in the ballgame. After a Stambone three-pointer at the three-minute mark, Amanda Pawlowski (Nanticoke, PA/Holy Redeemer) intercepted a Hornet pass and was immediately fouled. After her two makes, Stambone scored on another layup on a pass through traffic by Lindsey Chester (Alexandria, VA/Hayfield Secondary) to give the Lady Colonels a 50-42 advantage with 34 seconds to play. With the game in hand, two more made free throws by Pawlowski and battery-mate Megan Kazmerski (Kingston, PA/Holy Redeemer) sealed the game for Wilkes in their home opener.

The Hornets had their fair share of opportunities throughout the game and held an early first-half lead on stellar play from Imani Heggins' seven boards and eight points. Crystal Petrus led the Hornets in scoring with ten points and added two steals. With 12:38 to go in the first half, the Hornets led 15-5. Wilkes fought back to 20-16 with 8:11 to play before Kayla Brahm (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) sunk a crucial three pointer that brought the Lady Colonels back to within one point. After numerous turnovers on both sides of the ball, a Stambone layup, and a jumper from Kazmerski was what Wilkes needed to even the score 23-23 at the half.

The Lady Colonels had many contributions to earn the team victory. Chelsea Brown (Garnet Valley, PA/Garnet Valley) added six points while Ellen Rich (Hamden, CT/Hamden Hall) added four points while snagging nine rebounds to lead way for the frontcourt.

The Lady Colonels return to the pitch when they travel to Lehman, Pa for a non-conference matchup with PSU Wilkes-Barre Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
