WOMEN'S BASKETBALL UPENDS MARYWOOD 50-40

WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University women's basketball team upended Marywood 50-40 Tuesday evening in a non-conference matchup at the Marts Center.

With the win, the Lady Colonels start the season 3-0 while Marywood falls to 1-2.

Wilkes and the Pacers battled evenly through the opening minutes of the first half. The Lady Colonels used the depth on their bench to slow down the Pacer stride as Wilkes began to pull away at the 2:48 mark nearing the end of the first half. Palmerio drove to the basket for an open layup, and then quickly sunk a three pointer in transition off a feed from Elena Stambone (Jessup, PA/Valley View). Stambone then used a Pacer turnover on their next possession to score on her self-inflicted fast break at the 1:51 mark. Another Stambone layup on a dish from Amanda Pawlowski (Nanticoke, PA/Holy Redeemer) with twenty three seconds to play gave the Lady Colonels a 27-18 advantage heading into halftime.

The Lady Colonels started the second half the exact same way they ended the first—on a Stambone layup. After a Megan Kazmerski (Kingston, PA/Holy Redeemer) jumper and a Pacer miss, Kazmerski scored on a layup off a Stambone pass in transition. Up 33-20 with 17:17 to go in the period, Ginny Edwards (Warrington, PA/Central Bucks South) found Stambone wide open to knock down her only three pointer of the night. At the 10:33 mark, a Kazmerski jumper and three Pacer layups on their next possessions brought Marywood back to within ten points. Up 43-33, a Kazmerski layup and a Chelsea Brown (Garnet Valley, PA/Garnet Valley) jump shot gave Wilkes the 47-34 advantage with five minutes left in the game. A Kayla Brahm (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) make and an Ellen Rich (Hamden, CT/Hamden Hall) free throw anchored the final five minutes for the Wilkes offense as the Pacers scored in the final ten seconds to bring themselves back to within ten points.

Stambone led the way for the Lady Colonels by scoring 19 points as Kazmerski added ten of her own. Rich led the frontcourt with eight rebounds while posting four points and three blocks.

The Pacers were led by Brittany Mang with 14 points and Carly Leitzel with 13 boards.

The Lady Colonels return to action when they travel to Dallas, Pa to face Misericordia November 28th to open Freedom Conference play.
