COLD SHOOTING DOOMS LADY COLONELS IN 52-34 LOSS AGAINST MARY WASHINGTON

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – The Wilkes University women's basketball team shot a season-low 20.0 percent from the field converting only 11 field goals as the Lady Colonels fell 52-34 to Mary Washington in the opening round game of the Cruzin Classic on Tuesday morning.

With the loss Wilkes falls to 6-3 overall on the year while Mary Washington improves to 7-3 on the season.

With a ten-day layoff and long plane ride to Florida behind them, the Lady Colonels struggled to find their scoring touch throughout the contest. Megan Kazmerski (Kingston, PA/Holy Redeemer) put Wilkes up early 5-2 after she drained a deep three-pointer with 18:31 on the first half clock. A jumper from Elena Stambone (Jessup, PA/Valley View) kept the Lady Colonels up three, 7-4, just two minutes later.

Mary Washington took its first lead of the game when Aby Diop scored in transition as the Eagles led 14-13 with 6:01 left in the half. An 8-0 run over the final six minutes of the first frame gave Mary Washington a 22-13 lead at the break.

The Eagles continued their scoring run into the second half scoring the first 12 points of the stanza taking a 33-13 lead with 16:22 remaining. A Sam Partonen layup capped off the 20-3 run over a ten minute span from late in the first half to midway through the second.

Wilkes was unable to cut the deficit under 15 the rest of the way as a Kazmerski jumper with 1:18 made the score 49-34 before an Eagles layup and free throw ended the contest.

The Wilkes offense struggled to find its rhythm in the contest. Wilkes hit just 18.8 percent (3-16) from long range while committing 18 turnovers. Defensively, Wilkes was solid holding Mary Washington to 27.4 percent (17-62) shooting and just three three-pointers (21.4 percent).

Kazmerski was the lone Wilkes player in double figures finishing with 10 points and seven rebounds. Lindsey Chester (Alexandria, VA/Hayfield Secondary) came off the bench to score a season-high seven points and grab five rebounds in 18 minutes of action. Leading scorer Stambone, entering the classic averaging 25.2 ppg, finished with just four points on 2-for-14 shooting as the Mary Washington defense held check on the sophomore sharpshooter.

Diop led the Eagles with a game-high 14 points and nine rebounds, while Carol Dye (9 points) and Partonen (8 points) each contributed to the win.

Wilkes will be back in action tomorrow with a matchup against Curry College at 2:00 p.m. on the final day of the Cruzin Classic.
