With the win Wilkes moves to 4-2 overall, while PSU-Hazleton drops to 3-4 on the year. Wilkes used a suffocating full court press to jump out to a quick 21-8 lead after Megan Kazmerski (Kingston, PA/Holy Redeemer) drilled a three-pointer with 15:15 on the first half clock. A huge 27-2 run pushed the Wilkes lead to 48-10 as Elena Stambone (Jessup, PA/Valley View) scored 12 of her game-high 24 tallies during the stretch. The Lady Colonels would take a commanding 52-14 lead at the break after Chelsea Brown (Garnet Valley, PA/Garnet Valley)'s transition layup ended the Wilkes scoring for the half. The second half was much of the same as the Wilkes defense continued to cause PSU-Hazleton turnovers (26 total TOs) turning the miscues into easy transition scores. Wilkes also held a decisive advantage on the glass outrebounding the Lions 68-37 including a season-high 29 offensive rebounds. The 68 total rebounds set a new school record for total rebounds in a game. Stambone led 12 Lady Colonels who reached the scoring column with 24 points on 10-for-22 shooting adding three rebounds. Brown followed with 12 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks, her first double-double of the season. Kazmerski finished with nine points and five rebounds, while Angela Palmerio (Telford, PA/Lansdale Catholic) contributed eight tallies and one assist. Wilkes shot 38.3 percent (31-81) from the floor limiting PSU-Hazleton to just 20.3 percent (13-64) shooting from the field. The Lady Colonels also held their opponent without a three-point field goal for the first time this season. Taylor Smith led the Lions with 12 points on 9-for-10 shooting from the charity stripe. Wilkes returns to action Wednesday when the Lady Colonels travel up I81 to face former Freedom rival the University of Scranton at 7:00 p.m. in the Long Center.Print Friendly Version
