SEVEN-RUN 11TH PROPELS SCRANTON OVER WILKES BASEBALL, 19-13

EDWARDSVILLE – The University of Scranton used a seven-run 11th inning after a furious Wilkes comeback forced extra innings as the visiting Royals posted a 19-13 win over the Colonels Wednesday afternoon at Artillery Park.

Wilkes slips to 12-24 overall, while Scranton improves to 18-15 on the season.

Scranton led big early scoring eight runs in the first and four more over the next two innings to take a 12-1 lead after three. Carmen Lopresto (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area) doubled and later scored on an RBI single from Dan Pisanchyn (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) to plate Wilkes run in the first.

The Colonels cut into the lead in the fourth and fifth frames scoring eight runs over the two at-bats. A bases-loaded walk followed by a sacrifice flyout from Matt Ruch (Dallas, PA/Holy Redeemer) started the rally in the fourth. Lopresto added an RBI hit and Tim Benner (Catawissa, PA/Southern Columbia) crossed the plate on an errand throw from the Scranton shortstop to cut the Royals lead to 12-5. Wilkes made it 12-9 after five innings thanks to RBI hits from Benner and Lopresto in the bottom half of the fifth.

From there, the Colonels scored one run in the seventh and eighth to setup the full comeback in the ninth down 12-11 with one out remaining. Benner began the rally with a single followed by a Ruch free pass. Lopresto then singled plating Benner and tying the game at 12-12.

After the teams went scoreless in the tenth, Scranton exploded for  seven runs on five hits and two Wilkes fielding miscues to escape with the non-league win.

Lopresto led the way with the bat finishing 5-for-7 with two runs scored and five RBI's. Benner went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI's, while Tyler Marino (Wilkes-Barre, PA/Meyers) added four hits and one RBI.

Marc Perry (Dunmore, PA/Dunmore) suffered the loss pitching the 11th as eight different Colonels saw time mound. Mark Siebel (Rumson, NJ/Rumson Fair Haven) made his 60th career appearance in the loss becoming the school's all-time leader for games pitched.

Wilkes will conclude its Freedom Conference slate Friday with a nine-inning affair at Delaware Valley College at 3:30 p.m. before the two teams meet Saturday for a doubleheader at Artillery Park at 12:00 p.m.
