WILKES LACROSSE SUFFERS FIRST DEFEAT OF THE SEASON IN FREEDOM OPENER AGAINST EASTERN, 16-9
 
EDWARDSVILLE – Visiting Eastern University scored ten first half goals on way to a 16-9 Freedom victory over Wilkes University Thursday afternoon at Schmidt Stadium.
 
Wilkes falls to 6-1 on the year and 0-1 in Freedom play. Eastern improves to 3-6 overall and 1-0 in league games.
 
Eastern used 10 first half goals to take a 10-3 lead to the break as the Eagles held possession in their offensive end throughout the first frame. Keri Meerholz (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) scored twice and Carley Smith (York, PA/Dallastown) added another goal at the 19:21 mark to cap the scoring for Wilkes in the first half.
 
Gabby Ford (Elmont, NY/Sewanhaka) scored back-to-back goals to start the second half as Wilkes trailed 11-5 with 24:21 left in the contest. Eastern then answered with five staright goals to push the lead back to double digits holding a 16-5 advantage with 5:37 left. Smith, Ford and Olivia Dworak (Dupont, PA/Wyoming Seminary) capped off the lady Colonels scoring as Wilkes suffered its first defeat of the 2012 season.
 
Ford and Smith led the Wilkes offense with three goals and one assist each. Meerholz added two goals while Dworak contributed one tally.
 
Both Wilkes goalies saw action between the pipes. Cassie Cronin (Manchester, NH/Manchester Memorial) suffered the loss allowing 14 goals while making 13 saves. Justine Thimmel (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock) entered in relief making three stops in 18 minutes.
 
Shannon Wilcox led the Eagles with seven points on four goals and three assists. Lindsey Corbitt earned the win in the cage allowing five goals on eight saves.
 
Wilkes will remain until through Easter break returning to play next Saturday when they travel to Arcadia University for a Freedom matchup scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
