WILKES FIELD HOCKEY SUFFERS 5-3 DEFEAT AGAINST EASTERN IN FREEDOM OPENER

EDWARDSVILLE – The Wilkes University field hockey team dropped its Freedom Conference opener to Eastern University 5-3 Saturday afternoon at Schmidt Stadium.

With the loss Wilkes falls to 3-4 overall and 0-1 in league play. Eastern improves to 5-2 on the year, 1-0 in Freedom games.

Eastern jumped out to a 3-0 lead at the half with nine total shots, seven of which were on goal. Kelby Bolton found the net six minutes into the game. Bolton then had another shot four minutes later, which was deflected by Jess Jaindl for another goal. Brittany Moyer found the net three minutes later to give Eastern the commanding 3-0 going into the half. Wilkes had just three shots in the first period.

The second half was a different story. Wilkes got on the board with twenty minutes left in the second period off a Lauren Ritchey (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) goal. Lauren Pawling (Columbia, PA/Manheim Central) took the ball down the right side and crossed it to Ritchey for the easy goal and empty net. After another Bolton score, Wilkes found the net again eight minutes later at the 58:14 mark. Aliya Frankel (Ventnor, NJ/Holy Spirit) found the net on a dish from Lexi Thompson (Warrington, PA/Central Bucks South).

Wilkes found their last goal of the day in a corner situation with time expired. Ashley Hahn (Bangor, PA/Bangor) scored on a deflected shot giving the assist to Kaitlyn Bevans (Beaver Meadows, PA/Hazleton).

Wilkes returns to play Monday when the Lady Colonels travel to Reading, Pa. to face Alvernia University at 7:00 p.m.
