WILKES FIELD HOCKEY SUFFERS 3-2 OT LOSS AGAINST WASHINGTON COLLEGE IN FIRST ROUND OF SALISBURY INVITATIONAL

SALISBURY, MD – After jumping out to a 2-0 lead fifteen minutes into the game, the Wilkes University field hockey team could not hold on as Washington College scored two goals late in the first half and tallied the game-winner three minutes into overtime to claim a 3-2 win Saturday afternoon in the opening round of the Salisbury Invitational.

Wilkes falls to 1-2 overall following the defeat. It marked the second straight overtime game that Wilkes has played in posting a 4-3 overtime win over Wittenberg last weekend.

Olivia Dworak (Dupont, PA/Wyoming Seminary) gave Wilkes a 1-0 lead early scoring an unassisted goal just 6:04 into the contest. Kaitlyn Bevans (Beaver Meadows, PA/Hazleton) extended the Lady Colonels lead to 2-0 at the 9:15 mark when she found the back of the net on a shot from the top of the circle off an assist from Emily Saliba (Scotrun, PA/Pocono Mountain East).

From there, Washington College scored two unanswered goals before the break to tie the game at 2-2 heading into the half. The teams played a scoreless second half setting up the overtime frame.

Washington's Claire McAuliffe tallied the game-winner three minutes into the extra period finishing a play in front of the Wilkes net.

Washington held a 23-17 shot advantage and an 11-10 edge in corner attempts. Wilkes goalie Alexis Reed (Greenport, NY/Greenport) finished with 12 saves, while Washington keeper Stephanie Harryman made nine saves to record the win in net.

Wilkes returns to the field tomorrow when the Lady Colonels face Husson University in the consolation game of the Salisbury Invitational at 11:00 a.m. Husson dropped an 11-0 contest against the host #4 Salisbury in the earlier game Saturday.
