LADY COLONELS STOPPED AT FDU-FLORHAM 64-47
MADISON, NJ – The Wilkes University women's basketball team fell behind the FDU-Florham Devils and never regained control in a 64-47 loss at the Ferguson Rec Center Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Colonels stand at 10-6 overall and 2-4 in Freedom play while the Devils improve to 16-1 and 6-0 in the Freedom.
After a Devil jumper to start the game, Chelsea Brown (Garnet Valley, PA/Garnet Valley) evened the score with a bucket of her own. After a small run by the Devils, an Elena Stambone (Jessup, PA/Valley View) make followed by a Megan Kazmerski (Kingston, PA/Holy Redeemer) jumper brought the Lady Colonels back to within three, 9-6 with 15:51 to go in the first half.
Stambone's trey at the 13:14 mark tied the game at 13 apiece and got Wilkes going for a ten-point run of their own. In the ten-point run, Brown contributed a free throw and Stambone carried the load scoring the other nine points to give Wilkes a 23-13 lead with 7:55 to play in the first half. FDU-Florham countered with a ten-point spread of their own as the Wilkes scoring drought ended with four straight points from Lindsey Chester (Alexandria, VA/Hayfield Secondary). Three converted free throws from the Devils gave them the 30-27 edge going into the break.
The Devils continued where they left off, reeling off four straight points before Stambone converted a layup in transition on a pass from Kayla Brahm (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili). A Ginny Edwards (Warrington, PA/Central Bucks South) jumper at the 12:55 mark brought the Lady Colonels back to within 11, at 44-33. After a small run by the Devils, jumpers from Kazmerski and Edwards as well as free throws from Stambone brought the Lady Colonels back to within ten with 7:58 to play. From there, FDU-Florham kept their offensive pace as the Wilkes comeback attempt fell short.
The Devils were led offensively by Kyra Dayon and Leigh-Ann Lively with 23 and 22 points respectively.
Stambone led Wilkes with a team-best 21 points while Edwards followed with nine points and nine rebounds.
The Lady Colonels will return to the court on Wednesday when they travel to St. David's for a Freedom Conference matchup with Eastern.
