DAVID'S – The Wilkes University women's basketball team fell to Eastern University 57-42 Wednesday evening in Freedom Conference action. Following the loss, Wilkes stands at 10-7 overall and 2-5 in the Freedom while Eastern improves to 8-10 overall and 4-3 in Freedom Conference play. Hot shooting from Eastern and cold shooting by the Lady Colonels had Wilkes playing catch-up through the first period. Down by 12 with ten minutes to play in the period, Megan Kazmerski (Kingston, PA/Holy Redeemer) was fouled on her three point attempt. After sinking her three from the charity stripe, jumpers from Chelsea Brown (Garnet Valley, PA/Garnet Valley) and Ellen Rich (Hamden, CT/Hamden Hall) kept Wilkes within ten points. A Kazmerski layup and a Brown free throw got the Lady Colonels back to within eight before the Eagles scored three straight layups to end the period. Brown opened the period with a layup on a dish from Amanda Pawlowski (Nanticoke, PA/Holy Redeemer) and Rich hit a jumper on a helper from Brown to bring it back to within ten, at 31-21. After a pair of Jana Martin (Lititz, PA/Manheim Central) free throws and a Lindsey Chester (Alexandria, VA/Hayfield Secondary) layup, the Lady Colonels got to within six with a little of twelve minutes remaining in the game. After a small Eagle stretch, Elena Stambone (Jessup, PA/Valley View) hit a three pointer to bring Wilkes back to within eight. Moments later, another Stambone trey brought the Lady Colonels to within five, but that was the closest they would get as they Eagles countered with two three pointers from Kelsie Patton. Eastern was led by Meghan Nowak and Patton with 18 and 16 points. Wilkes was led offensively by Brown's 13 points and nine rebounds. Stambone contributed nine points while Rich added seven boards. The Lady Colonels return to the court Saturday when they host Delaware Valley at 12:00 p.m. The game has been moved up an hour due to the 'Hall of Fame' ceremony taking place after the men's game.
