WOMEN'S BASKETBALL ROARS BACK TO BEAT DEL VAL 82-70

DOYLESTOWN, PA – The Wilkes University women's basketball team roared back after being down by 15 points early in the game to earn an 82-70 victory over Delaware Valley Wednesday evening.

With the win, the Lady Colonels improve to 9-4 and 1-2 in Freedom play while the Aggies fall to 6-8 and 0-3 in the conference.

After an Ellen Rich (Hamden, CT/Hamden Hall) free throw and a layup by battery-mate Elena Stambone (Jessup, PA/Valley View), the Aggies reeled off 18 straight points to put Wilkes in a deep hole.  A Ginny Edwards (Warrington, PA/Central Bucks South) layup at the 13:58 mark kick-started the Wilkes offense and ended the six minute scoring drought. After a Stambone layup, Chelsea Brown (Garnet Valley, PA/Garnet Valley) scored eight straight points to bring the Lady Colonels back to 18-15 with 11:08 left to play in the first half. A small scoring stretch by the Aggies was stalled when Megan Kazmerski (Kingston, PA/Holy Redeemer) and Jana Martin (Lititz, PA/Manheim Central) went back-to-back before Edwards fed Stambone for a jumper to bring the Lady Colonels back to within three points at the 8:26 mark, 24-21. Lindsey Chester (Alexandria, VA/Hayfield Secondary) and Cara Basile (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) were worked into the mix as the Lady Colonels got hot and surpassed the Aggies by outscoring them 20-9 through the remainder of the period.

Delaware Valley got to within six points when Eireann Anastasi hit a jumper early in the second half, but that was the closest the Aggies would get as the Lady Colonels offense kept them at bay. Wilkes held its largest lead of the game when Chester scored a layup on a fast break to give the Lady Colonels the 59-40 advantage. A Kazmerski three-pointer and layups by Chester set Martin up for her second layup of the game and gave Wilkes a 14 point lead with 5:17 to play. The Aggie comeback attempt failed and allowed the Freedom Conference's highest scorer Stambone to gather five more points at the end of the game and assure the Lady Colonels of their first Freedom win of the year.

The Aggies were led by Anastasi and her 24 points while Breanna Coll collected 18 points and a team-best eight rebounds.

Stambone continues to impress, dropping 26 points while Brown recorded 17 points and 11 boards. Chester contributed 12 points while Rich garnered a team-best 12 rebounds.

The Lady Colonels will play Saturday at 1:00 p.m. when they host Manhattanville College at the Marts Center.
