Wilkes trailed by as many as seven points midway through the first half until Stambone began to catch fire. After a long three-pointer and transition layup from Stambone, Kayla Brahm (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) added a steal and score to give Wilkes its first lead of the contest at 22-21 with 6:47 left in the first half. Wilkes settled for a two-point advantage at the break (30-28) following a Chelsea Brown (Garnet Valley, PA/Garnet Valley) layup with :30 on the clock. Stambone continued her hot shooting in the second frame scoring four straight points at the foul line and connecting on a deep trey to up the Wilkes lead to six, 52-46 with 5:06 remaining. Ellen Rich (Hamden, CT/Hamden Hall) scored down low for Wilkes and freshman Chelsea Smelas (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe) and Brown hit back-to-back jumpers to extend the lead to double figures, 60-48. Goucher would come no closer than eight points through the final three minutes of play as the Lady Colonels held on for its first win of the season. Stambone finished 8-for-24 from the field and 6-of-11 from the charity stripe while adding three assists. Brown added 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Rich contributed 11 points and seven rebounds with two blocks. Wilkes held a decisive lead on the glass outrebounding Goucher 48-35 including 22 offensive rebounds. Sharnell Huff led Goucher with a team-high 22 points and six rebounds. Wilkes will face host McDaniel College in the championship game tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. McDaniel advanced to the final with a 77-26 victory over Mary Baldwin. Print Friendly Version
