Wilkes falls to 1-5 (0-1) while Misericordia stands at 3-2 (1-0) in the Freedom Conference. Wilkes jumped out to an early 10 point lead just minutes into the game when Elena Stambone (Jessup, PA/Valley View) made a foul shot to put the Lady Colonels up 15-5. Wilkes stretched the lead to 18-6, their largest lead of the game, when Chelsea Brown (Garnet Valley, PA/Garnet Valley) completed an and one on a good drive to the lane. With 9:22 left in the first half Wilkes Megan Dragan (Whiting, NJ/Manchester Township ) made a layup to give the Lady Colonels a 26-15 lead. From that point in the game the Lady Colonels would go scoreless and did not hit a single bucket until Stambone nailed a desperation three point attempt from just inside midcourt at the buzzer. The Cougars ended the half on a 17-3 run and went into the break up 32-29. The Cougars continued their run into the second half outscoring the Lady Colonels 11-4 just six minutes into the half increasing their lead to 43-33. The Lady Colonels were unable to get the lead back under eight points and with 5:19 left in the game they trailed by 16, 57-41. Down the stretch the Lady Colonels made it a six point game with :16 remaining; however, the Cougars Lauren Smicherko stymied any late heroic chances by nailing four consecutive foul shots to put the game officially out of reach. Stambone led the Lady Colonels with 22 points on 8-for-19 shooting drilling three treys from deep. Brown contributed a double-double as she poured in 16 points and grabbed a career-high 16 boards. Wilkes shot 32.2% (19-59) from the field, 23.5% (4-17) from 3-point range and 56% (14-25) from the foul line. For the Cougars Justine Seely led the way with a double-double scoring a team-high 20 points and 12 boards. Smicherko added 19 points including a productive 11-of-15 from the charity stripe. Misericordia shot 41.8% from the field (23-55), 16.7% (1-6) from 3-point range and 51.4% (19-37) from the charity stripe. The Lady Colonels look to pick up their first conference win on Saturday when the travel to DeSales University for a Freedom Conference matchup against the Bulldogs.
