LADY COLONELS CRUISE OVER KEYSTONE 60-45

WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University women's basketball team cruised to a 60-45 victory over Keystone College in non-conference action Monday night at the Marts Center.

With the win, Wilkes improves to 11-10 overall while the Giants fall to 13-8.

After battling basket-for-basket through much of the first half, the Lady Colonels used their transition offense to hold an eight point lead over the Giants. After a Kate Thomas (Schuylkill Haven, PA/Blue Mountain) jumper, Elena Stambone (Jessup, PA/Valley View) nailed a trey to give Wilkes a four point edge. After a Ginny Edwards (Warrington, PA/Central Bucks South) free throw, Edwards then nailed a jumper on the next Lady Colonel possession to build a seven point advantage. Chelsea Brown (Garnet Valley, PA/Garnet Valley)'s layup on a helper from Amanda Pawlowski (Nanticoke, PA/Holy Redeemer) at the 3:04 mark helped build an eight point lead. A Brown layup and a three-point play by Keystone brought the score to 30-26 heading into the break.

In the second half, Wilkes used a high pressure defense and was able to score 11 straight points and hold the Giants scoreless for the first six minutes of the second half. Megan Kazmerski (Kingston, PA/Holy Redeemer) got the offense firing with a steal on the defensive end and going coast-to-coast for a layup. Ellen Rich (Hamden, CT/Hamden Hall) hit a jumper before giving way to Brown for a bucket of her own. A Kayla Brahm (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) rebound and pass to Pawlowski for a three-pointer in transition gave the Lady Colonels a 13 point lead, at 39-26.

Two Lindsey Chester (Alexandria, VA/Hayfield Secondary) free throws capped the scoring run for Wilkes as Charlene Hook answered with a bucket for the Giants. At the 9:10 mark, Kazmerski drained a trey and wasn't satisfied as she nailed a second three-pointer on the next Wilkes possession to build a 51-32 Lady Colonel edge. Wilkes kept pace with the Giants through the end of the second half to pick up their 11th victory of the season.

The Giants were led by Chantel Blake's 11 point performance.

Wilkes was led by Kazmerski's strong 16 point and 13 rebound showing.  Brown added 12 points and 13 boards while Stambone contributed 11 points. Rich and Chester snagged 12 and 10 boards respectively while Pawlowski dished three assists. Pawlowski is now at 277 career assists making her five helpers shy of the all-time assist record of 282.

Wilkes will be back in action Wednesday when they host FDU-Florham in Freedom Conference action at 6:00 p.m.
