WILKES FIELD HOCKEY DROPS SEASON OPENER 6-3 AGAINST UNION IN COLONEL CLASSIC
EDWARDSVILLE – Union's Ali Flake scored two goals and Nicole Merigliano added one goal and one assist to lead visiting Union College to a 6-3 win over Wilkes University in the opening game of the 2013 Colonel Classic at Schmidt Stadium Friday afternoon.
Wilkes falls to 0-1 following its season opening loss while Union improves to 1-0.
After Union took a 1-0 lead scoring in the game's first eleven minutes, Wilkes' Aliya Frankel (Ventnor, NJ/Holy Spirit) tied the game at 1-1 scoring on a shot at the top of the circle thanks to an assist from Kerryn Redcay (Reading, PA/Wilson).
Union answered with two straight goals to take a 3-1 lead to the break. Ashley Ream (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) tallied her first goal of the year with an unassisted shot from the top of the circle that beat Union keeper Molly McCune cutting the deficit to 3-2 with 48:31 on the second half clock.
Union would add two more strikes in the last ten minutes of play to thwart any Wilkes comeback attempt. Olivia Dworak (Dupont, PA/Wyoming Seminary) scored (Ream assist) at the 65:02 mark to end the Lady Colonels scoring on the afternoon.
Wilkes held a 15-9 shot advantage, while garnering 15 penalty corners to Union's three attempts. Lady Colonel keeper Alexis Reed (Greenport, NY/Greenport) finished with one save while McCune tallied eight stops in net for Union.
Wilkes will face SUNY Geneseo in the consolation game of the Colonel Classic tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. No. 5 Salisbury matches up with Union in the championship game at 2:30 p.m. Salisbury was a 5-0 winner over Geneseo in the second game of Friday's tournament first round.
