WILKES WOMEN'S BASKETBALL STUMBLES AGAINST DVC 59-52; STAMBONE SCORES 1,000TH POINT

WILKES-BARRE – Elena Stambone (Jessup, PA/Valley View) scored a game-high 27 points including the 1,000th point of her career, but visiting Delaware Valley College used timely shooting to edge out Wilkes University 59-52 in a Freedom Conference contest Wednesday night at the Marts Center.

Wilkes slips to 2-10 overall and remains winless at 0-3 in Freedom play following the defeat. Delaware Valley improves to 8-5 on the year, 2-1 in conference games after the road victory.

Wilkes led early in the first half thanks to two straight hoops from Stambone. Delaware Valley answered to tie the game at 12 with 14:45 left in the first half. The Aggie lead grew to eight as two free throws and two inside scores put Delaware Valley up 23-15 with 5:21 left in the half.

Stambone added another driving layup and one of two free throws from Ginny Edwards (Warrington, PA/Central Bucks South) cut the deficit to five at the break, 28-23.

Delaware Valley continued to keep its lead throughout the start of the second half before Stambone hit back-to-back three-pointers, including the shot that put her over the 1,000-point plateau as Wilkes tied the game at 37 with 11:54 remaining.

The Aggies used a timely three-point shot from Agatha Drozd and a 15-footer from Eireann Anatasi to take back the lead 53-48 with under five minutes to play. A jumper from Brenna Coll followed by another score on the perimeter from Anatasi sealed the conference road win for the Aggies who led by seven with under two minutes left in the game.

Stambone finished 10-for-27 from the floor notching her milestone basket on a three-pointer from the left wing. Just a junior, Stambone becomes the eleventh Lady Colonel to reach the 1,000-point mark in school history. No other Lady Colonel scored more than six points in the loss as Chelsea Smelas (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe) and Ellen Rich (Hamden, CT/Hamden Hall) each contributed six tallies in the loss.

Delaware Valley saw three players reach double figures with Anastasi leading the way with 20 points and six rebounds. Coll added 14 points and 10 rebounds while Brittany Wood contributed 13 points and five caroms in the victory for the Aggies.

Wilkes returns to the court Saturday traveling to Purchase, N.Y. to face Manhattanville College in a Freedom contest at 1:00 p.m.
