WILKES WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS 72-57 AT MANHATTANVILLE IN FREEDOM PLAY
 
PURCHASE, N.Y. – Host Manhattanville College opened up an 11-point halftime lead and never trailed throughout on way to a 72-57 victory over visiting Wilkes University Saturday afternoon at the Kennedy Gymnasium.
 
Wilkes drops to 2-11 overall and remains winless in conference play standing 0-4. Manhattanville improves to 6-8 overall following the win and evens its Freedom mark at 2-2.
 
The Valiants lead grew to nine points midway through the first half after Ashley Franklin cashed in three times on the free throw line after being fouled from long range. Another score from Franklin and an inside bucket from Shayna Robinson upped the Manhattanville advantage to 24-11 with 8:31 left in the half.
 
After the Valiants extended the lead to 17 points late in the first half, Wilkes' Chelsea Brown (Garnet Valley, PA/Garnet Valley) scored in transition and Elena Stambone (Jessup, PA/Valley View) added two free throws with under five seconds on the clock as the Lady Colonels trailed 36-25 at the break.
 
Wilkes fought back through the first six minutes of the second half using a Missy Oertner (Schnecksville, PA/Parkland) three-pointer and subsequent jumper to cut the deficit to four, 44-40, with 14:20 left in regulation.
 
That would be the closest Wilkes would come to tying the game as Manhattanville used an 11-0 spurt over the next seven minutes to take its largest lead of the contest, 70-52, with just 2:15 on the second half clock.
 
Manhattanville did most of its damage in the paint outscoring Wilkes 34-16 inside the lane. Bri Pabon led the attack with 17 points and four assists. Ashley Raaf followed with 16 points and seven rebounds, while Franklin contributed 14 points and six caroms.
 
Stambone led Wilkes with 16 points on 5-for-15 shooting. Oertner came off the bench to add 10 points including two three-pointers. Ellen Rich (Hamden, CT/Hamden Hall) anchored the frontcourt for Wilkes finishing with six points, ten rebounds and one blocked shot.
 
Wilkes struggled shooting from the floor as a team finihisng just 31.3 percent (20-64). Manhattanville fared much better from the field finishing the game 42.2 percent (27-64) from the floor.
 
Wilkes has a quick turnaround playing at Penn State Hazleton in non-conference action Monday at 7:00 p.m. before returning to Freedom Conference play Wednesday at cross-town rival King's College at 6:00 p.m.
