LADY COLONELS SNAP SEVEN-GAME LOSING SKID, DEFEAT JOHN JAY 59-53

BETHLEHEM, PA --  The Lady Colonels ended their seven-game losing skid when they defeated John Jay College of Criminal Justice 59-53 on Saturday afternoon in the Consolation game of the 13th Annual Roosevelt's Moravian Winter Classic.  Wilkes improves to 2-7 on the year while John Jay falls to 3-8.

At the 9:28 mark of the first half the Lady Colonels trailed 19-12 their largest deficit of the first half.  However, the deficit seemed to spark the Lady Colonels as they ended the half on a 15-7 run to take a 27-26 lead at half.  Kayla Brahm (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) drilled a 3-pointer with :06 left to give the Lady Colonels momentum headed into the locker room.  Wilkes shot 10-39 (25.6%) while John Jay shot 9-33 (27.3%) for the half.

The Lady Colonels came out of the half right where they left as they used a 19-9 run to open up a 46-35 lead with 13:00 remaining in the game.  John Jay did not back down as they used a 16-2 run of their own to take a 41-48 lead with 5:32 left in the game.  Three consecutive baskets for Wilkes gave them a 55-51 lead in which John Jay was able to amount any kind of comeback over the remaining 1:50.

Elena Stambone (Jessup, PA/Valley View) once again led Wilkes in scoring with 19, nailing three three-pointers and grabbing five boards.  Chelsea Brown (Garnet Valley, PA/Garnet Valley) nearly recorded another double-double as she finished with nine points and nine rebounds.  Ellen Rich (Hamden, CT/Hamden Hall) pulled down eight rebounds and Haley Mesaros (Royersford, PA/Pope John Paul II) grabbed seven of her own.  The Lady Colonels as a team caused John Jay to commit 21 turnovers, 13 of which were steals.

Stambone was named to the All-Tournament team after posting 38 points and grabbing 13 boards for the tournament.  She was 6-for-20 from long distance for the two games.

The Lady Colonels will return to action on Monday evening when they host Juniata College in a non-conference matchup.  Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
