SECOND HALF SURGE NOT ENOUGH FOR LADY COLONELS IN 62-52 LOSS AGAINST JUNIATA

WILKES-BARRE – Kate McDonald scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead visiting Juniata College to a 62-52 non-league win over Wilkes University Monday night at the Marts Center.

Wilkes falls to 2-8 overall after the defeat. Juniata improves to 7-5 on the year following the victory.

The visiting Eagles controlled most of the first half as McDonald scored eight of her 22 tallies in the frame. The Juniata lead grew to as many as 12 points at 20-8 in the first stanza as Sarah Sherman drilled one of three three-pointers on the night for the Eagles with 6:57 left in the half. Wilkes cut the deficit to seven late in the frame on an Elena Stambone (Jessup, PA/Valley View) transition bucket, but a McDonald jumper and two Eagle free throws sent the visitors to the break up 28-16.

Wilkes responded in the second half especially on the defensive end upping its pressure switching to a man-to-man defense from a first half zone look. Stambone also got going offensively canning a deep three-pointer and two jumpers as Wilkes trailed 51-41 with 8:12 on the clock. The Lady Colonels were unable to cut the deficit any lower than nine points throughout the rest of the game although outscoring the Eagles 36-34 in the second half.

Stambone led the Wilkes attack with a team-high 18 points on 7-for-22 shooting. She now stands just 32 points away from the 1,000-point mark for her career. Jamie Campbell (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) was the only other Lady Colonel in double figures finishing with a career-high 10 points behind two treys. Ellen Rich (Hamden, CT/Hamden Hall) was solid in the post posting a game-high 14 caroms and four blocks.

Paige Dennison contributed 12 points to join McDonald in double figures for Juniata.

Wilkes returns to the court Wednesday hosting local rival the University of Scranton at 6:00 p.m. at the Marts Center. The Lady Colonels posted a 75-67 victory over Scranton last season, its first win against the Lady Royals in 38 years snapping a 51-game losing skid in the process.
