LATE RALLY FALLS SHORT FOR WILKES WOMEN'S BASKETBALL IN 62-59 LOSS AT MUHLENBERG

ALLENTOWN, PA – Despite a game-high 29 points from junior Elena Stambone (Jessup, PA/Valley View), Wilkes University could not overcome an eight-point halftime deficit in a 62-59 loss at Muhlenberg College Monday night in non-conference action.

Wilkes falls to 5-16 overall following the defeat, while Muhlenberg improves to  on the season.

After falling behind 38-30 at the half, the visiting Lady Colonels mounted a furious second half comeback. Stambone began the surge with two free throws and a three-point play that cut the Mules advantage to two, 46-44, with 8:33 on the clock.

Following a Muhlenberg missed layup, Stambone attacked the basket again being fouled and sent to the line. She connected on both free throws to tie the game at 46, the first time the game was tied in the final twenty minutes. Two minutes later a Stambone trey gave the Lady Colonels their first lead in the second half 49-48. The lead grew to four at the 4:17 mark when Stambone drilled another long three-pointer from the left wing.

Muhlenberg battled back using a 7-0 run over the next three minutes to take a three point lead with just over a minute remaining. A Stambone layup cut the lead to one with 1:22 left, but Muhlenberg grabbed an offensive rebound on its next possession forcing Wilkes to foul with :17 left. After two made free throws pushed the Mules lead back to three, Jamie Campbell (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson)'s three-point attempt to tie fell short and Muhlenberg escaped with the home victory.
