Steve Finkernagel The Lady colonels conclude their season Saturday hosting rival King's BIG SECOND HALF PROPELS DESALES OVER LADY COLONELS 2/18/2014 10:24:00 PM Box Score BIG SECOND HALF PROPELS DESALES OVER LADY COLONELS WILKES-BARRE, PA – Wilkes University battled throughout the first half and trailed by just three points, but visiting DeSales University outscored the Lady Colonels by 15 points in the second half as they went on to win 71-53 Tuesday night at the Marts Center. The loss drops Wilkes to (5-19, 2-11 Freedom) while DeSales improves to (19-5, 9-4 Freedom). Wilkes fell behind early 7-1 before going on an 8-2 run to tie the game at 9-9 with 15:02 remaining in the half. DeSales countered the run with a 7-2 run of their own to put them up 16-11 with just under 13 minutes to go in the half. DeSales was able to stretch their lead to nine with under seven minutes to go before Wilkes clawed back and trimmed the lead to one when Elena Stambone (Jessup, PA/Valley View) scored on a layup with 1:09 to go in the half. Alexiah Grant hit two foul shots for the Bulldogs to extend their lead to three 31-28 as the teams went to the locker rooms for the end of the first half. Wilkes shot 11-for-25 (44.0%) from the field and 5-for-8 (62.5%) from the charity stripe. Chelsea Brown (Garnet Valley, PA/Garnet Valley) led the Lady Colonels with nine points and five rebounds, with Stambone contributing seven. DeSales shot 35.5 percent (11-31) from the field and 57.1% (8-14) from the line in the first 20 minutes of the game. Grant carried the Bulldogs scoring 15 first half points with Alex Suk chipping in nine, as she went 5-for-7 from the line. At the 16:35 minute mark in the second half an Ellen Rich (Hamden, CT/Hamden Hall) layup tied the game at 35. The Bulldogs responded with an 8-0 run that put them up 43-35 with 14:18 to go in the game. Wilkes did not go away as they used a 5-0 spurt to climb back within three points 45-42 with 12:14 to go. That was the closest the Lady Colonels would get as DeSales used a 21-9 run to extend their lead to 66-51 with 4:10 to play. DeSales last basket with :50 to go finished the scoring at 71-53. Stambone finished the evening with 19 points while Brown scored 16 and grabbed seven total rebounds. Wilkes shot 44.9% (22-49) from two-point distance, 23.1% (3-13) from 3-point range and 50% (6-12) from the foul line for the game. The Bulldogs Grant scored 32 points including her 1,000th career point in the game. Sondrine Glovas scored all 14 of her points in the second half and Suk finished with a double-double: 11 points and 10 boards. DeSales shot 26-for-64 (40.6%) from the field, 7-for-17 (41.2%) from deep and 12-for-21 (57.1%) from the charity stripe for the game.
