WILKES SCORES THREE IN THE EIGHTH ON WAY TO 4-1 WIN AGAINST MUHLENBERG

MYRTLE BEACH, SC – Freshman Matthew Reese (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro) drilled a two-run single in the bottom of the eighth as Wilkes scored three times in the deciding frame to post a 4-1 win over Muhlenberg College Tuesday afternoon.

Muhlenberg opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first before the Colonels tied the game in the third when Tom Ring (Massapequa Park, NY/St. John the Baptist) scored on a throwing error by the left fielder following a lead-off single.

The game went tied through to the eighth before Wilkes managed the three-run deciding frame. James Brown (Covington, PA/North Pocono) and Tyler Marino (Wilkes-Barre, PA/Meyers) both drew two-out walks before Marcus Leaf (Reading, PA/Berks Catholic) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. After another hit batter that forced home a run, Reese connected on the two-run single giving Wilkes some breathing room heading to the ninth.

Matt Kaster (Traben-Trabach, Germany/Crestwood) entered in the ninth and recorded the save with three groundouts to seal the victory for Wilkes.

Ring led the way at the plate going 2-for-4 with one run scored. Dan Pisanchyn (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights), Bobby O'Keefe (Bethpage, NY/Bethpage) and Reese accounted for the five Wilkes hits in the win.

Johnny Jan Jr. (Germantown, MD/Northwest) started and pitched six innings allowing two hits and the unearned run. Forrest Jordan (Sullivan County, PA/Sullivan County) pitched two scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth to record the win.

Wilkes (3-1) faces York College of Pennsylvania tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. in a nine-inning contest.
