CENTER VALLEY, PA – After taking a 4-0 lead after the first inning of play, visiting Wilkes University was unable to hold on as host DeSales University scored seven unanswered runs over a five-inning stretch to claim a 7-4 Freedom Conference victory Tuesday afternoon.
 
Wilkes drops to 8-7 overall and 3-3 in league games following the defeat. DeSales improves to 7-8 on the year, 6-1 in conference contests.
 
A Stephen Ruch (Dallas, PA/Holy Redeemer) two-run double down the left field line put the Colonels up 2-0 early in the first inning. James Brown (Covington, PA/North Pocono) added another two-run double, this time to left center to up the Wilkes advantage to 4-0 after the first.
 
DeSales scored one run each in the third, fourth and fifth to cut the Wilkes lead to 4-3 after five. A sacrifice fly and fielder's choice in the seventh gave the Bulldogs a 5-4 lead with two innings remaining. Brian Mauro connected on two-run home run to center to give DeSales some breathing room heading into the top of the ninth where the Bulldogs would not relinquish the lead.
 
Brown led the Wilkes bats going 2-for-4 with two RBI's. Three Bulldogs finished with two or more hits led by Nick Fischer's 3-for-4 performance.
 
Tom Ring (Massapequa Park, NY/St. John the Baptist) suffered the loss on the mound for Wilkes pitching the seventh and eighth innings. Chris Polaski entered in relief of starter Steven Wallace in the first and pitched all nine innings allowing just three hits and no runs after Wallace gave up Wilkes' four runs.
 
Wilkes returns to Freedom play tomorrow traveling to Delaware Valley College for a nine-inning affair starting at 3:30 p.m.
