Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Wilkes Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Eastern

KINGSTON, PA – Wilkes defeated Eastern 5-2 in the first game before falling 4-3 in the second game of the doubleheader on Friday afternoon.

Wilkes is 5-7 overall and 1-1 in the Freedom Conference while Eastern is 4-9 and 1-2 in the Freedom.

Game one proved to be a pitching gem for Wilkes as starter Patrick Condo (Dallas, PA/Holy Redeemer) pitched a complete game four-hitter scattering two runs early before settling in to record the victory.

Down 2-0 after three innings, the Colonels offense exploded for four runs on five hits in the bottom of the fourth to take its first lead 4-2. After Ryan Herbst (East Islip, NY/St. John the Baptist) and Dan Pisanchyn (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) led off the inning with singles, Zak Berg (Mountain Top, PA/Crestwood) plated Wilkes first run on an RBI single to left field. Bobby Schappell (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville) and James Brown (Covington, PA/North Pocono) added the rest of the power at the plate connecting on RBI hits. Schappell doubled down the right field line and Brown laced a two-run single through the right side.

Joshua Slocum (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) added an RBI base hit in the bottom of the fifth adding another insurance run as Wilkes held its three-run lead over the final two innings.

Condo went all seven innings allowing just four hits while striking out three Eastern batters to record his first win of 2015. Wilkes pounded out 14 hits over the game including two hits each from Jarret Clymer (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom), Stephen Ruch (Dallas, PA/Holy Redeemer), Pisanchyn, Berg, and Slocum.

In game two Wilkes jumped off to a 2-0 lead after the first inning thanks to a pair of errors from the Eagles defense and a RBI hit-by-pitch by Ruch.  Eastern took the lead in the top of the 3rd when they plated three runs to make it a 3-2 advantage.

Wilkes rallied to tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the 6th when Jarret Clymer (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) scored Marcus Leaf (Reading, PA/Berks Catholic) on a sacrifice fly to right field.  The Colonels gave up a run in the top of the 7th to give the Eagles a 4-3 lead.  In the bottom of the 7th Reese led off with a double down the line and advanced to third on a wild pitch.  The Colonels were unable to push Reese across the plate despite having nobody out in the inning.

Chris Nixon (Swoyersville, PA/Wyoming Valley West) started game two for the Colonels striking out eight in 6.2 innings of work.  Nixon allowed seven hits and just two earned runs in the no-decision.

Wilkes travels to Eastern tomorrow for a single nine-inning game at 2:00 p.m. in St. Davids, Pa. to finish the series.
