Wilkes Women's Tennis Uses Big Comeback to Win 5-4 at Scranton

SCRANTON, PA – Down 2-1 after doubles play and 4-1 after two singles matches, the Wilkes University women's tennis team scored wins in the final four singles matches to post a 5-4 victory over host the University of Scranton on Wednesday night.

Wilkes remains perfect on the season at 4-0 following the win. Scranton suffers its first defeat of the year standing 5-1 overall.

Taylor Hoffmann (Huntingdon Valley, PA/Lower Moreland) and Julia Baranov (Huntingdon Valley, PA/William Tennent) scored the lone doubles win for Wilkes at No. 2 pairs winning 8-5 as Scranton led 2-1 heading into singles play.

After Scranton took No. 1 and 2 singles in straight sets, Wilkes began its furious comeback. First Baranov scored a 6-4, 6-1 win to cut the advantage to 4-2. Madison Salmon (Endicott, NY/Union Endicott) added a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 4 to pull Wilkes to within one at 4-3. Erin Volutza (Sinking Spring, PA/Lancaster Catholic) then tied the match at 4-4 with a 6-0, 7-6 win at No. 5 before Jordan Vasarkovy (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) made the comeback complete clinching the match with a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 3.

Up next Wilkes hosts Marywood University on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at the Ralston Athletic Complex on Homecoming weekend.
