Wilkes Men's Tennis Wins Five Singles Titles at MAC Individual Championships

WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University men's tennis team captured five of the seven singles titles on day two of the Middle Atlantic Conference Individual Championships at the Ralston Athletic Complex and Kirby Park Courts on Sunday.

In the No. 1 singles flight, top seeded Courtney Murphy (Bronx, NY/Christopher Columbus) began his run by beating Arcadia 6-2, 6-0 to advance to the semifinals against DeSales. In the semifinals, Murphy won a tight first set 7-5 before cruising in the second set 6-1 to head to the finals against No. 2 seeded Manhattanville. It was a closer match than his first two of the day but Murphy was able to secure the No. 1 singles title for a fourth straight year, winning 6-3, 6-4.

Chris Maderitz (York, PA/Central York) breezed through his No. 3 singles flight on the way to the title as he faced little resistance from players representing King's (6-1, 6-0), Lebanon Valley (6-0, 6-1) and Manhattanville (6-2, 6-0) to claim a singles title for the third consecutive year.

Larry Scartz (Woodbridge, VA/Home School) won his first singles title at the event after making quick work of FDU-Florham (6-0, 6-2) to capture the No. 4 singles flight championship. In route to the title, Scartz dispatched Eastern (6-0, 6-2) in the quarterfinals and bested Manhattanville (6-2, 6-4) in the semifinals.

Another MAC Individuals rookie secured his first title as Jack Maline (Northport, NY/Northport) won in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 to outduel Stevenson for the No. 5 singles flight championship. In order to reach the finals, Maline beat King's (6-2, 6-3) in the quarterfinals and Lebanon Valley (6-1, 6-2) in the semifinals.

The third Wilkes rookie to leave the event with a title was Colin Greenman (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees) in the No. 7 singles flight. After getting past Stevenson (6-4, 6-2) in the quarterfinals, Greenman won in straight sets over DeSales (6-1, 6-4) before making quick work of King's (6-1, 6-0) to give the Colonels five singles titles for the event.

In the No. 2 singles flight, Jonathan White (Saylorsburg, PA/Pleasant Valley) got past Messiah with relative ease 6-1, 6-1 before falling to the eventual champion Manhattanville in the semifinals 6-3, 7-5.

With the five singles and three doubles titles at this year's MAC Individual Championships, Wilkes has now won 50 singles and 32 doubles titles, both the most of any school in the MAC.

This marks the end of the fall season for the Colonels men's tennis team as they will kick off their spring campaign at the Drew University Invitational on February 22-24, 2019.
