HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC – The Wilkes University men's tennis team opened its spring break trip in fine fashion sweeping a pair of matches 9-0 against Nebraska Wesleyan and St. John Fisher on Sunday night.
 
In the match against Nebraska Wesleyan, Wilkes jumped out to a 3-0 lead after sweeping all three doubles flights. Courtney Murphy (Bronx, NY/Christopher Columbus) began singles play with a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 1. Artyom Nabokin (Las Vegas, NV/Danvers) went 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 before Andrew Neidig (Matamoras, PA/Delaware Valley) finished his No. 3 match 6-0, 6-1.
 
Chris Maderitz (York, PA/Central York), Ryan Simon (Mahwah, NJ/De Paul Diocesan) and Jack Maline (Northport, NY/Northport) all recorded wins at No. 4 though No. 6 singles to conclude the sweep. Simon dropped his second set before coming back to win in the third set 10-6. Maderitz and Maline went straight sets for the wins.
 
It was much of the same in the match against St. John Fisher as Wilkes took a 3-0 lead after doubles competition. Murphy, Maderitz and Simon all recorded their second singles wins of the day, while Jonathan White (Saylorsburg, PA/Pleasant Valley), Gabriel Velez (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) and Alec Levin (Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape May) all notched wins to finish off the second sweep of the day for the Colonels.
 
Wilkes has a day off before returning to the courts Tuesday for a match with Methodist University at 8:15 a.m.
