No. 1 Wilkes Women's Tennis Set to Host No. 4 Misericordia in MAC Freedom Semifinal Today
WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University women's tennis team enters the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) Team Championship as the No. 1 seed and seeking its 12
th consecutive conference championship. The Lady Colonels are set host No. 4 seed Misericordia University in the semifinal round today at the Ralston Athletic Complex with a 3:30 p.m. start time.
Wilkes has defeated Misericordia in the conference championship finals seven out of the past nine seasons and last year dispatched of the Cougars in the semifinal round.
Wilkes enters the matchup after a perfect 6-0 regular season in the MAC Freedom and at 13-3 overall. The Lady Colonels are currently ranked as the No. 19 team in the Oracle/ITA Division III Atlantic South Region rankings.
Misericordia completed its regular season with a 3-3 mark in the conference and at 11-4 overall.
One week ago, the Lady Colonels captured a 9-0 sweep of the Cougars in Dallas, Pa.
Jordan Vasarkovy (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North),
Francesca Varela-Seri (Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg),
Dana Saliyev (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks South),
Erin Volutza (Sinking Spring, PA/Lancaster Catholic),
Dagney Markle (New Oxford, PA/New Oxford), and
Sarah Malone (Williamsport, PA/Loyalsock) were all straight set singles winners and the teams of Vasarkovy / Saliyev, Varela-Seri / Volutza, and Markle /
Brittany Stanton (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) all won their doubles matches 8-0.
Vasarkovy, the defending MAC Freedom Player of the Year, has led the Lady Colonels out of the No. 1 singles position with a 9-3 record and is 12-5 overall this season. She has teamed with Saliyev for a 10-3 record from the No. 1 doubles slot and the duo has a 14-4 overall doubles record this season. Saliyev has competed mostly from the No. 3 singles spot this season, going 4-3 overall from the position. She is 11-4 overall in singles matches this season.
Varela-Seri has gone 7-4 from the No. 2 singles position and has a 12-6 overall individual record. She has teamed with
Laura Zielinski (Mt. Wolf, PA/Northeastern) for a 9-2 record from the No. 2 doubles spot this season and the duo is 14-4 overall. Zielinski has a perfect 7-0 record from the No. 4 singles position and has a 16-3 overall singles mark this year.
The winner of this semifinal matchup will advance to Saturday's final to take on the winner of the other semifinal where No. 2 FDU-Florham is hosting No. 3 DeSales University. The MAC Freedom Championship Final will take place at the highest remaining seed at a time to be determined.
