Wilkes Set for NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships
WILKES-BARRE – For the 12
th consecutive season the Wilkes University women's tennis team will head to the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships, where it will matchup with Nichols College in a First Round match at 12:00 p.m. today. The Lady Colonels are participating in a Regional hosted by Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vt. from May 10-12.

Wilkes earned an automatic qualification into the field of 49 teams by winning the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) Championship. The Lady Colonels enter the NCAA Tournament with a 15-3 overall record and are ranked No. 19 in the Oracle/ITA Division III Atlantic South Region.
This match will mark the first meeting between Wilkes and Nichols.
Nichols enters the NCAA Tournament for the third time in program history and are 19-2 overall this season. The Bison won their second-straight Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship to earn an automatic bid.
The Lady Colonels are led by two-time MAC Freedom Player of the Year
Jordan Vasarkovy (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North). She is 12-3 this season from the No. 1 singles position and 15-5 overall. She has teamed with
Dana Saliyev (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks South) for a 13-3 record from the No. 1 doubles spot in the lineup and the duo is 17-4 overall. Saliyev is 5-3 from the No. 3 singles position and 12-4 overall.
Laura Zielinski (Mt. Wolf, PA/Northeastern) was named the 2018 MAC Freedom Women's Tennis Championship MVP with wins in both of her singles matches and doubles matches during the championship. She is 7-0 from the No. 4 and 5-2 from the No. 5 singles positions and has a 19-3 overall record. Zielinski has teamed with
Francesca Varela-Seri (Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) to go 12-2 competing from the No. 2 doubles position and the team has a 17-4 overall doubles record. Varela-Seri has an 8-4 record at No. 2 singles and is 13-6 overall.
Erin Volutza (Sinking Spring, PA/Lancaster Catholic) and
Brittany Stanton (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) are 7-2 from the No. 3 doubles spot and are 9-2 overall as a pair. Volutza is 5-0 and 4-2 from the No. 3 and No. 4 singles spots and 11-2 overall. Stanton has a 6-0 record from the No. 5 singles position and is 10-3 overall.
Dagney Markle (New Oxford, PA/New Oxford) has gone 10-1 in singles action while
Sarah Malone (Williamsport, PA/Loyalsock) is 12-2.
Also featured in the Regional with Wilkes are two nationally ranked teams in No. 4 Middlebury College and No. 18 Skidmore College as well as Skyline Conference Champion Yeshiva University, State University of New York Champion SUNY Geneseo, and North Eastern Athletic Conference Champion Penn State-Berks.
