Wilkes Women's Tennis Doubles Team Falls in Quarterfinals

 
FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The Wilkes University women's tennis doubles pairing lost their quarterfinals match 8-0 to Carnegie Mellon on Sunday morning to be eliminated from the Flight A bracket. This was the first time a Wilkes women's tennis doubles team advanced to the quarterfinals of an ITA Regionals tournament.
 
After a stellar first day that saw Jordan Vasarkovy (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) and Dana Saliyev (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks South) win their first two matches of Flight A play to advance to the second day of the competition, they ran into a buzz saw in the Carnegie Mellon duo of Lordache/ Liberchuk. In the 8 a.m. match, the Colonels were unable to get anything going as they fell to the Tartans to exit the doubles tournament. Every time Wilkes was able to register a nice point to start building momentum, Carnegie Mellon would answer right back to take the game and cruise to an impressive victory.
 
With three consecutive wins in the first day of singles Flight E play, Erin Volutza (Sinking Spring, PA/Lancaster Catholic) was scheduled to play Audrey McBride (Southern Virginia) in the 8 p.m. finals. Unfortunately, McBride withdrew early in the afternoon which awarded the championship medal to Volutza. Both Volutza and Interim Coach Younes Hidass were disappointed that she was unable to compete in the finals match after a hard fought day one.
 
In both cases, Hidass stressed how proud he was of the women's team as they made program history in both the doubles and singles format.
 
Wilkes women's tennis returns to the court on Tuesday October 2nd when they host Scranton at the Ralston Athletic Complex at 4:00 p.m.
